Department of Basic Veterinary Medicine

 

  The department of veterinary basic medicine consists of four teaching-research sections: Pharmacology & Toxicology, Pathology, Anatomy & Histoembryology, and Physiology & Biochemistry. Veterinary basic medicine is a key discipline of the province of Hubei, and there are two Excellent National Courses: Animal Physiology, and Animal Anatomy, Histology & Embryology. The mission of the Department is to discover, apply, and disseminate scientific knowledge in basic veterinary medicine. Instruction, research and continuing education in the disciplines of microscopic anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, are central to the education of future veterinarians.

  The veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology section offers more than 10 courses to undergraduate students, including Veterinary Pharmacology and Veterinary Toxicology. The main research area covers veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, veterinary drug residue and food safety, pharmacokinetics of veterinary drugs, and antibiotic resistance. The section also commits itself to establishing a national standard for veterinary drugs, discovering and developing new veterinary drugs, and developing quick tests and regents for drug residues. Based on the Veterinary Pharmacology Teaching and Research Section, the Institute of Veterinary Pharmaceuticals was found in 1998. The Institute of Veterinary Pharmaceuticals has already developed into a National Reference Laboratory of Veterinary Drug Residues and the National Laboratory of Safety Evaluation of Veterinary Drugs, its research space covering over 5000 square meters.

  The department has conducted over 80 research programs, including the National Basic Research Program of China (973 program),and the National Science and Technologies Supporting Plan among other Key Science and Technology Programs supported by the national and local governments. The department has obtained a total of 50 million for research. Twenty-two of twenty-sixfiled patents awarded. Thirty-six national standards have been established; ten test products for veterinary drug residues have been registered and licensed. More than 80 articles were SCI cited among 240 publications. One First Prize for Science & Technology Progresses was awarded by the Ministry of Education, and one Second Prize for Science & Technology Progresses was awarded by the Hubei provincial government.
