Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine 

  The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine was established for the purposes of preventing and controlling globally important diseases in animals and humans. The department is committed to discovering and disseminating knowledge in the prevention, control, and eradication of diseases; to improving the health of animal and humans; and to promoting sustainable agricultural productivity. The department consists of the sections for Infectious Animal Diseases, Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology, Veterinary Parasitology and Veterinary Public Health. Of its 41 faculty members and staff, there are 13 full professors and 22 associate professors. The department has one State-key Laboratory and one center for animal vaccine engineering & technology. 

  To meet current and future needs in veterinary medicine and public health, the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine focuses on the education and training of professional, post-professional and graduate students, as well as on outreach education in disease control, prevention, and eradication. The department offers a series of courses for professional and graduate students, including Animal Infectious Diseases, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Immunology, Veterinary Public Health, Animal Virology, Veterinary Science, Animal Epidemiology, Animal Products, and Animal Welfare & Protection. The department also provides students pre-internship workshops.  

  The research goals of the department are to explore new knowledge leading to the development of methods to prevent disease, to ensure agricultural sustainability, productivity, and efficiency, and to promote health in animal and human populations. In recent years, the department has been awarded 3 National Basic Research Programs (973 program), 2 National High-tech R&D Programs (863 Program), 1 National Science and Technologies Supporting Program, and 42 National Natural Scientific Foundation programs. There are also 93 Key Science and Technology Programs supported by the province or the ministry. Due to its productivity, the department was awarded the Innovative Team grant by the Ministry of Education and the National Natural Scientific Foundation. The department focuses on fundamental and applied scientific research in infectious animal diseases, playing a leading role in genetically engineered vaccines and molecular diagnostic reagents. The department was the first in the nation to characterize swine pseudorabies and to develop an inactivated vaccine that has been used nationwide. The department also developed over 30 molecular diagnostic kits and new vaccines such as recombinant pseudorabies and avian influenza vaccines. Vectors have been constructed from pseudorabies, actinobacillus pleuropeumoniae (App), and Salmonella to express other antigens for vaccine production. The department was awarded three second prizes for Progress in National Science and Technology, a second Prize for Technical Invention by the Ministry of Education, 3 First Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology and one second Prize by the province of Hubei.

Services:

  The department has an outstanding extension and outreach program, providing professional expertise to assist in the decision-making processes of animal and human health professionals and commercial organizations as well as local, provincial, national, and international governments as they endeavor to promote the health of animals and humans. In collaboration with the Zhongbo Biochemistry Company, the department set up the Bonong Research and Development Center as a joint venture. The department also administrates an animal biological product company and a diagnostic center for infectious animal diseases, which manufactures and markets over 50 million vaccines and diagnostic reagents, and tests over 50 thousand clinical samples. In collaboration with more than 100 large scale industrialized swine farms, extension faculties of the department has provided over 20 on-site technique training sessions every year. For 12 successive years, the department hosted the Annual Symposium of National Disease Control and Eradication in Large Scale Industrialized Swine Farms.
