Huazhong Agricultural University School of Animal Sciences and School of Veterinary Medicine (HAU CAS&CVM) is one of the traditional superior schools of HAU. It originated from the 1950-founded specialty of veterinary medicine in the former Hubei Agricultural School. In 1952, during nationwide school reorganization, it became the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Medicine in the Huazhong Agricultural School. In 1995 it was changed to School of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Medicine, and it was renamed in 2002 to become today’s CAS&CVM.
The school management is organized into two lines: the communist party committee (CPC) and the administration, under which there are one administration office and 6 departments. The office has set up 5 sub-offices: teaching administration, laboratory teaching, routine affairs, student affairs and continued education, which are stuffed with a capable service and management team. The 6 departments are: Department of Animal Science and Technology; Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding, Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science; Department of Basic Veterinary Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine. Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine. The school has a superior faculty team with a rational age structure, a high percentage of post-graduate degrees and relatively high academic capability. The team is led by academic masters and has a group of prime-aged excellent members. The preventive medicine team led by academician Chen Huan-Chun has won the title of “Hubei Province Research Innovation Team”. Currently the School has 151 teaching and administrative staff, there were 121 full-time teachers, 31 professors and 29 associate professors, among which there are 2 members of the Chinese Engineering Academy, 2 national level experts, 9 ministry or provincial level experts, 23 doctorate student advisors and more than 40 members who enjoy government special stipend.
In the 53 years of school (department) history, under the proper leadership of university CPC and administration and with the effort of several generations, the school has grown from small to large, from weak to strong, and has developed a multi-discipline, multiple-level education structure with a relatively mature teaching system. Currently, the school has two first-level disciplines – animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, and offer two undergraduate majors – animal sciences and veterinary medicine. Both disciplines have been accredited with doctorate degree awarding capacity. Under the two firstlevel disciplines there are five second-level disciplines: animal genetics and breeding, animal nutrition and feed science, basic veterinary medicine, preventive veterinary medicine and clinical veterinary medicine, and all have been accredited with master’s degree awarding capacity. Among the five second-level disciplines, animal genetics and breeding is a national key discipline, and basic veterinary medicine and preventive veterinary medicine are Hubei province key disciplines.
The School has solid research capacity. Based on its own resources, the School has established a series of research, technology extension, and monitoring/detection institutions, including the National Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology, the Ministry of Agriculture Key Laboratory of Swine Genetics and Breeding, the National Livestock Engineering and Technology Research Center, the China (Wuhan) Breeding Pigs test Center, the Ministry of Agriculture Pig Quality Monitoring, Inspection, and Test Center, a National Key Laboratory of Food Safety Evaluation, a National Reference Laboratory of Veterinary Drug Residue Detection, a Hubei Province Key Laboratory of Preventive Medicine and a Hubei Province Feed Quality Monitoring and Inspection Station. In the last three years, research teams lead by academician Xiong Yuan-Zhu and Chen Huan-Chun have been awarded more than 230 research grants totaling more than 100 million yuan from national “973”, “863”, “948”, national plan of science and technology, national natural science foundation, provincial plan of science and technology, other research projects and foundations.
Research in the School has been pleasingly productive. In the recent five years, 1142 articles have been published, including 180 SCI source journal articles; 156 works and text books have been published; and 56 awards of either research or teaching have been won, including a second-class award,for National Science & Technology progress a second-class award for National Excellent Tteaching Achievement, a award for National Plan of Science & Technology important research achievement, and several province and ministry level awards. Two courses have won national essence course title, three courses have won provincial essence course or excellent course titles, and there was a first-class award for Hubei Province Higher Education Schools Teaching Achievements.
The school emphasizes heavily on student training. At November of 2005, the school has registered 1072 full-time undergraduate students, 426 master’s degree students and 145 doctorate students. The school has set up 27 intern bases within or outside the university, and established a close relationship in joined student training with 22 famous enterprises. The School has graduated more than 6000 people science founding. Graduates from the School are widely welcomed by employers and praised for their solid theoretical training, strong hands-on ability, innovative consciousness, and high overall quality.
In the new historic period, the school will firmly grasp the development principles of higher education, at the “eleventh five-year” planning opportunity, consistently insist on the Scientific Outlook of Development, insist on the center task of undergraduate education, and continue to improve graduate education. The school, base in Hubei, will gear to the needs of the whole nation to serve the “Three Agricultural” issues, and never stop striving for training new agricultural research and technology specialty talents.
